To Go Big, Go Small
IES Executive Director and NCMEP Director Phil Mintz appeared in an article focusing on the growth of small manufacturing businesses, in the November issue of Business North Carolina. “Smaller manufacturers are thriving,” says Mintz. “They’re more nimble, much more apt to be strong in their niche area, and they’re able to build on that a lot better.”

Mertek Solutions Named Small Business of the Year
Mertek Owner Jerry Pedley, both an IES and NCMEP advisory board member, is featured on the cover of Business North Carolina’s (BNC) December issue with the title “Mr. Robot,” a reference to his company’s work building robotic solutions. The company was named 2017 small business of the year by BNC, a statewide business advocacy magazine.
Guerrilla RF Earns ISO Certification
Greensboro-based Guerrilla RF, a major supplier of high performance Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs) and Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) for consumer, commercial and military wireless product applications, was recently awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, develops standards that set specifications for products, services and systems, to ensure high levels of quality, safety and efficiency. NC State COE Leads in Mfg USA Institutes Collaboration
NC State is involved with half of the 14 Manufacturing USA institutes located throughout the US, more than any other university. The university leads PowerAmerica, and has taken the Southeast Lead in the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMI). IES has staff embedded in three of the initiatives, including PowerAmerica, CESMI and the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL).
