Safety Guardian Trivia

An arc flash occurs when a flashover of electric current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor to another, or to ground. The results are often violent and the flash can produce temperatures upwards of 35,000°F. In comparison, NASA estimates the sun’s surface temperature to be:

approximately the same (35,000°F)
almost double (69,550°F)
Less than half (14,225°F)
Less than a third (9940°F)

Answer

D. While heat generated by an arc flash can reach temperatures of up to 35,000°F, the sun’s estimated surface temperature is just under 10,000°F.

ARC Flash Safety

Arc flash is a phenomenon where a flashover of electric current leaves its intended path and travels through the air from one conductor to another or to the ground. The results are often violent and when a human is in close proximity to the arc flash, serious injury and even death can occur. OSHA maintains an arc flash safety handout to help workers stay safe from arc faults.

OSHA #501 Trainer Course for General Industry
September 27-30 | Charlotte, NC

Successful completion of this course results in participants becoming OSHA-authorized trainers in OSHA’s Outreach Training Program. Authorized trainers can conduct both 10-hour and 30-hour general industry classes that provide training to workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces along with information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a workplace safety complaint.
