Understanding Labor Trends
The difficulty of finding qualified workers and the ongoing labor shortage is on every manufacturer’s mind. Labor trends and impacts have been presented at the state level, but this session will hone in on the labor market in the Piedmont Triad and Charlotte area regions to help you understand that region’s particular challenges.
Presenter—Dr. Michael Walden
During his 43 years on the faculty at NC State University, Dr. Walden became recognized as an expert on the state economy and public policy. He is the author of twelve books and over 300 articles and reports, and he has made 3000 personal appearances. Dr. Walden is also a frequent contributor to the national and state media, and continues to write a biweekly newspaper column.
Using Lean, Process Improvement and Technology
The goal of lean process improvement is to enable employees to systematically find ways to deliver more value to their customers faster. It does this by providing a systematic, scientific approach to practicing continuous improvement as a part of daily work. By using technology, a company can have faster workflows and accurate reporting.

Jason is a Senior Manufacturing Engineering Specialist at NC State University Industry Expansion Solutions (IES), where he assists clients with automation strategies and understanding how Industry 4.0 technologies can be adopted and leveraged as part of their own lean trajectory, OEE improvement, and an increasingly positive bottom line.
Tapping into Veterans
Finding pools of untapped talent to fill in-demand roles is a top priority for employers. Hiring military veterans has proven to be a successful strategy; in addition to gaining high-performing employees with low turnover, companies generally earn enormous goodwill from customers and a public-image boost when they commit to hiring more military veterans.

Michael is the director of the NC State University Industry Expansion Solutions (IES) Defense Industry Initiatives. Michael is a former Marine and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel. Michael has a comprehensive understanding of the processes and procedures North Carolina businesses face in the acquisition and execution of U.S. government contracts.

Business assessments can be the first step in determining where your business is today, where you would like it to be and missed opportunities for improvement as well as revealing how your company compares to similar organizations. Kevin is the assistant director of technology management at NC State University Industry Expansion Solutions (IES). He provides strategic coaching and training in areas such as competitiveness review, business strategy development, new product introduction, innovation, advanced manufacturing methods, performance excellence and market growth. Kevin also supports other areas of IES including quality management systems and Six Sigma instruction. Kevin is an adjunct instructor in the Biomedical Engineering department where he teaches DFSS and certifies senior design projects. Kevin is also a Baldrige Examiner and AHCA Master Examiner and serves on the TNCPE Board of Directors.
